MUSEUM OF THE MOON
November 2023  | Larnaca | Part of Larnaca Biennale 2023

Museum of the Moon is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram.
Once In a Blue Moon and Wonderdots joined forces to literally bring the moon to the heart of the town. Mesmerizing in its own right, OIBM curated a special program of events, collaborating with local artists to create a unique experience. This gave both artists and audiences the opportunity to engage with this extraordinary, once-in-a-blue-moon spectacle.

THEATRE UNDER THE MOON
The Skini 8 team presented Nostalgia, a play born during the pandemic when the longing to return to familiar, safe places became overwhelming. To a family home, an old neighborhood, or the carefree days of childhood. From this yearning, Nostalgia emerged, now brought to life on stage through the story of two strangers who 'randomly' cross paths and step into each other's nostalgic worlds on a summer night by the sea.

DANCE UNDER THE MOON
"Meet Up"
"Will you come? The moon is watching... It sees the soul, defining the mysterious aura of the night. It fills my solitude. If you don't believe it, look up high, and you will see. How many times have you wondered who else is looking at it at the same moment as you? Let's make a promise, you and I, to wait for each other in the same spot. What do you say? Will you come?"

Under the moonlight, dancer and choreographer Stavri Kalopetridou performed a poignant solo act, accompanied by musician Emili Tsianou. Through their personal interpretations, the performance evoked those fleeting moments when the soul feels liberated, and under the moon’s watchful gaze, the body seems small—caught between oblivion and hope.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM OF THE MOON

Measuring seven metres in diameter, the moon features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface.

Over its lifetime, the Museum of the Moon will be presented in a number of different ways both indoors and outdoors, so altering the experience and interpretation of the artwork. As it travels from place to place, it will gather new musical compositions and an ongoing collection of personal responses, stories and mythologies, as well as highlighting the latest moon science.

The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones. Each venue also programmes their own series of lunar inspired events beneath the moon.
